The Outdoor Kitchen Explosion

One of the fastest rising landscape trends is that of the Outdoor Kitchen; no fashionable home these days is complete without one. But how do you incorporate a kitchen and garden outdoors? Let’s explore the ways…

Summertime is outdoors time; time for the family and friends to gather round for dinner to enjoy the longer evenings and cooler weather. It makes sense then that one feature that’s increasingly becoming an expectation for homebuyers and homeowners alike is an outdoor kitchen. Gone are the days of having just the standard BBQ or pizza oven sitting out on the back deck; we’re now designing outdoor spaces that are really an extension of our kitchens; equipped to cook, serve and above all – entertain.

The Setup

You don’t have to go all out with your outdoor kitchen setup; the budget is a consideration as is the space you have available. Your outdoor kitchen can be as simple as some creating some cupboard space and setting up your barbeque with a nice servery. If you do decide to do a bit more, you could look at installing a breakfast bar with some stools making it more social, and creating a casual space for breakfast and reading the paper. Add to that a more formal dining area with seating and lounge space and you have the ingredients for an outdoor living and entertaining space with mass market appeal!

Once the sun goes down, you don’t want to be sitting in darkness.  Set the ambience and comfort of those long summer evenings with some low-voltage halogen uplights that can be nestled into nearby foliage – or use outdoor lanterns and candles as design features and enhancements.

Some of the best outdoor kitchen designs incorporate open-air structures to protect the outdoor cooking area and of course the guests. The result is a kitchen and dining area that feel outside, but still, provide protection for the space in all weather.

If you’re going to invest into your outdoor area, then don’t forget about entertainment options. This is where your personality can really come into play.  Beer taps, flat-screen TVs, plush lounge chairs, and wine refrigerators can be incorporated into any modern outdoor kitchen design – it’s up to you where you (eventually) draw the line!
